What's New in Desert Exposure

Our Valentine to you this month ranges from wildfire defense to writing groups, from ants to Apacheria. If you remember the wildfires that raged through our region beginning just about this time last year, "The Fire Next Time" is must reading for its tips on creating "defensible space" around your home. Jim Kelly, a pretty renowned writer himself, visits with local writing groups to see how they support each other’s creative endeavors. In Jay Sharp’s latest Southwest Wildlife visit, he zooms in on the humble harvester ant; individually, they may not seem like much, but when they put their "Collective Wisdom" to work, look out! Jerry Eagan's Hiking Apacheria series returns, with a look at old maps and how the Apaches looked at the land before Europeans came along with lines and boundaries.

Also in this issue, Tom Barry, author of the new book Border Wars, returns to our pages with a look at the "Border Bonanza" bringing millions of dollars to tiny, remote Antelope Wells, NM. Restaurant writer Peggy Platonos visits Manolo's Café in Deming. Borderlines columnist Marjorie Lilly also writes about the latest twist in plans for a tribal casino at Akela. And we preview this month's Chocolate Fantasia in Silver City and For the Love of Art Month in Las Cruces and Mesilla.

Don't worry! Unlike those other, chocolate-coated Valentines you may be getting this month, our February issue contains zero calories.
