Silver Spirit Gallery celebrates the First Friday Art Walk, August 6, with an artists' reception, 5-7 p.m., featuring works by David Brink and Jo Ann and Marion Childress. Brink, an award-winning photographer, works solely in black and white and practices "old-school photography." Seedboat Gallery's new exhibit will feature new work by Chris Alvarez, Jean Bohlender (our January 2008 cover artist) and Elli Sorensen. Las Cruces & Mesilla Arts Scene
The Tombaugh Gallery of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces will feature the Society of Layerists in Multi Media, August 1-27, in a show entitled "Re-emergence: Old To New." 2000 S. Solano, 522-7281.
This month the Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery will feature watercolorist Mayanna Howard and oil painter/caricaturist Hal Fore. 2470 Calle de Guadalupe, 522-2933.
Los Artesanos Galeria will feature three artists during August: Horacio Cordova works primarily in clay, Doug Martin paints in acrylics, and Pierre Nichols' (our March 2009 cover artist) medium is the gourd. 1910 Calle De Parian, 526-1144.
A photo essay by Linda Montoya, "People of Chiapas," opens at the Branigan Cultural Center on August 6. In 1984, Montoya visited Chiapas, Mexico, and photographed residents; she returned in 2003 and sought out the same people. The exhibit documents the changes she found.
Concurrently, "Chiapas: People, Architecture and Landscapes," photographs by Susan Bryant, will be on exhibit in the Richardson Gallery. Bryant belongs to an organization that works to establish relationships with several groups of indigenous peoples in the rural areas of Chiapas. This work is part of a series of images she made during trips to Chiapas in 2004 and 2005. She recalls, "Although the people I met on my trips have lived with poverty, they were rich with their generous spirit, gratitude and joy."
Receptions for both exhibits will be held during the August First Friday Ramble, 5-7 p.m. "People of Chiapas" will close August 21 to make way for a traveling exhibit on Frida Kahlo. The Bryant exhibit will remain on display through August 28. 501 N. Main St., 541-2154, las-cruces.org/museums
Colorist oil painter Bonnie Mandoe (our November 2006 cover artist) will hold a studio sale over Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 4-6, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Quesenberry Farmhouse. "Color Las Cruces," the first of a planned annual plein air competition and community arts festival, is looking for artists for its competitions and gallery hop, Sept. 11-12. There will also be a plein air workshop with Kevin Weckbach preceding the event, Sept. 9-10. Deadline for entries and the workshop is August 13.
