Silver City/Grant County Arts Scene

 

Silver Spirit Gallery will feature the artwork of Donna Schmidt, Ann Taylor and Lynn Welsch in June, with an opening reception on June 4, 5-7 p.m. as part of the First Friday Gallery Walk. Schmidt is a realist painter of landscapes, floral arrangements and still lifes. Taylor paints landscapes, still lifes, Indian pots, cactus, yucca and pueblos. Welsch creates art quilt pieces inspired by the natural beauty of places she has visited. 215 W. Broadway, 388-2079.

Award-winning Silver City artist Dagny Sellorin is exhibiting 30-plus years of paintings and drawings of nudes and a recent beaded sculpture at (a)SP."A"E : Studio/Art/Gallery, with an opening on Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The show will continue on view for one month. 110 W. 7th, 538-3333.

The R.A. Williams Bi-Annual Art Show, sponsored by the Biological Psychiatry Institute, is coming to Pinos Altos on Saturday, July 3, with an opening 1-6 p.m. The show will feature pottery by Judy Jenks and paintings by Jane Seavers. 20 Main St., (602) 279-1026.

The Grant County Art Guild is hosting its 25th Purchase Prize Award Show, "Southwestern Realism in Art." Las Cruces & Mesilla Arts Scene

 

A new gallery is coming to Calle de Mercado, near the Preston, as soon as early next year. Rokoko Art Gallery is the brainchild of A.me and Mitch Alamag, who owned an art gallery in Los Angeles before moving to Las Cruces. rokokoart.com

Kathleen Carricaburu will exhibit "Contemporary Fine Art Jewelry" at the Museum of Art, opening on June 4 with a reception from 5-7 p.m. and running through August 21. Carricaburu, a MFA candidate at New Mexico State University in the arts/metal program, will present jewelry and fine metal sculptures as "poetic objects."

Also opening on June 4 will be an exhibit by the Mesilla Valley Fractal Artists, at the Branigan Cultural Center through June 26, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Fractal art is a relatively new form of visual art derived from mathematical formulas and algorithms. Using a computer and fractal-generating software, artists create images that are inherently abstract. Maria Kruse, whose work is included in the exhibit, sums it up best: "It's magic." A "Nova" documentary, "Fractals, Hunting the Hidden Dimension," will be shown at 10 a.m. on Saturdays in the gallery to help visitors understand the art and science of fractals. An after-hours tour of the exhibit, a fractal demonstration and gallery talk will take place on Friday, June 18, at 5:30 p.m. 501 N. Main St., 541-2154.

The New Mexico State University Art Gallery will exhibit "Connecting with the Divine: Devotional Art of New Mexico," with an opening reception at 5 p.m. on June 4. "Connecting with the Divine" is an exhibition of Mexican and New Mexican religious art from the Mary and J. Paul Taylor Family collection. NMSU students working with professors Elizabeth Zarur and Silvia Marinas have researched more than 90 works in the Taylor collection, based in Mesilla, and will present their findings in an accompanying catalog of their essays. The Tombaugh Gallery will present "Art in a Box," a themed exhibit by ArtForms, opening with an artists' reception Sunday, June 6, from 12-2 p.m. and continuing through July 2. The exhibit features works defined by size — conforming or fitting in a range of sizes from a matchbox to a shoebox. 2000 S. Solano. 522-7281.

"The Handwork" concludes the five-part series of exhibitions and sales of the work of noted Southwestern women artists held at Casa de Zia and curated by John Boler of John A. Boler Fine Art. This special offering of smaller, contemporary Navajo weavings and various tribal baskets will open June 12 with a public reception from 1-5 p.m. and continue, by appointment, until July 9. 4372 Camino Dos Vidas, 382-6914.

The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery features the artworks of Betty Sweeney and Louise Lockhart this month. Both are primarily watercolorists. 2470-A Calle de Guadalupe, 522-2933.

 

 

Sierra County Arts Scene

 

On Sunday, June 6, a group of Sierra County artists will present a selection of unframed artwork from their personal portfolios for sale to the public in "The Portfolio Show" at the Hillsboro Community Center, 1-4 p.m. Participating artists include James Gasowski, Julie Shufelt, Mark Nero, R.Wm.
