Silver City & Grant County Art Scene
The new First Friday celebration continues at downtown Silver City galleries on April 2. Yello on Yankie will host an opening reception for "Thread Paintings" by Anne Eckley, 4-7 p.m. 108 W. Yankie, 534-4968.
April 2 is also the opening of the Mimbres Region Arts Council's Print Project show, which will be on view at the MRAC/Wells Fargo Gallery through June 1. 1201 Pope St., 538-2505.

Silver Consolidated Schools' annual end-of-school-year show of works by children in local elementary schools will be on view at The Hub on Bullard Street in downtown, April 22-24.

Las Cruces & Mesilla Art Scene
An exhibit of contemporary works from New Mexico Art Quilters, "Finding Solace," will open at Branigan Cultural Center on Friday, April 2, during the First Friday Ramble from 5 to 7 p.m. The quilts will remain on display through May 1. Quilters across the state were invited to submit art quilts that expressed their personal interpretation of solace; 21 were selected.
The Branigan will also showcase handmade books in an exhibit titled "Book It!," April 2 through May 1. Exhibit organizer Laurel Weathersbee will hold a workshop on handmade books April 3, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; $35 fee, advance registration. 501 N. Main St., 541-2154.
Las Cruces and Mesilla will soon boast two new galleries. Already open is Galeria Tepin, an offshoot of this month's Border Book Festival. It's open Thursday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and by appointment. 2220 Calle de Parian, 523-3988.
Opening April 9 is Nopalito's Galeria. If the name sounds familiar, it's because the gallery is owned by the Gallegos family, which has operated Nopalito's Restaurant since 1964. The family recently purchased the historic adobe building next to their restaurant, built by the Rivera family in the early 1930s, to preserve it and showcase local art.
Students of Las Montanas High School, under the direction of art teacher Toni Gilman, will be featured in the opening exhibit, "Visual Beginnings," with a reception April 9, 4-6 p.m. The gallery will be open Friday-Sunday, 8 a.m.-8:30 p.m. 326 S. Mesquite.
And the recently opened Quillin Studio and Gallery presents the work of Alan Carrison during April, with an opening April 2, 5-7 p.m. Behind downtown COAS Books, 312-1064.
The Tombaugh Gallery will exhibit the digital art of Luisa Hernandez and the large-scale graphite drawings of Jenni Higginbotham, April 3-30, with an artists' reception April 11 from 12-2 p.m. There will also be an artist talk at 12:30 p.m. Unitarian Universalist Church, 2000 S. Solano, 522-7281.
Las Cruces photographer Sue Ann Bonar will display 10-foot images of the Seven Angels of Revelation she took of Tiffany stained-glass windows discovered in a barn in 2001 in Pennsylvania, April 4-11. Alameda House, 526 S. Alameda Blvd. 640-7569.
The Preston Contemporary Art Center will showcase five artists in its 2010 Spring Exhibition opening on April 9, with a reception for the artists from 6:30-8:30 pm. The artists, who all happen to be female, deal with strong personal insights in works in a variety of mediums; they are Janet Ballweg, Julieanne Kost, Svala Olafsdottir, Carol Weber and Jean Reece Wilkey. An Artists' Dialogue presentation featuring Weber, Olafsdottir and Wilkey will be held at the gallery on April 10 at 1 p.m. 1755 Avenida de Mercado, 523-8713.
Female artists are also in the spotlight from John A. Boler Fine Art, which continues its series, "Some Artists Are Born Women" with works by Amy Cordova and Pamela Enriquez-Courts. The New Mexico Watercolor Society, Southern Chapter, will meet April 11 at 2 p.m. at Good Sam's, 3011 Buena Vida Circle. Las Cruces multimedia artist Sylvia Bowers will demonstrate photomontage as a basis for painting. The public is welcome; $3 members, $5 non-members. 647-1193.
The 2010 MFA exhibit, "En Masse," opens April 16 in NMSU's University Art Gallery with a reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m.; it's the culminating exhibit of three years of advanced study by 10 graduates. Works include sculpture by Amanda Marcott; painting by Isadora Stowe, Brett Thompson and Chris Bardey; graphic design by Jacob Munoz and Edward Schmitt; photography by Angelita Rodriguez and James Meaux; and printmaking by Elizabeth Nielsen and Seth Roby. Luna County Arts Scene
The CC:HD Gallery in Deming has closed after the sale of its building at 206 S. Gold Ave. Photographer Roger L. Wever says he hopes to reopen in another location.
The Deming Arts Council will feature a "Fort Sill Apache Tribe Show" this month, with a reception April 11, 1-3 p.m. 100 S. Gold, 546-3663.
Sierra County Arts Scene
Percha Creek Traders in Hillsboro will feature "Spring? SPRING!!!," a seasonal celebration with new works by Sandy Hopper (hand-painted silk), Inga McCord (watercolors) and Nolan Winkler (monotypes and acrylics on paper).
