Silver City/Grant County Arts Scene
Downtown Silver City continues to be the place to be on the first Friday of every month. March's First Friday events include a combined opening at Yello on Yankie and Moonstruck Art galleries. Both galleries will be open until 7 p.m. on Friday, March 5. Featured will be the artists/owners of the two galleries. Susan Szajer, owner/artist of Yello on Yankie, will present her new works with a series entitled "Dwellings." Pat Bouchard, co-owner/artist of Moonstruck, will feature handmade books called "face-books." Bill Blakemore, also co-owner/potter of Moonstruck, offers "Keep Your Buns Warm!" Yello on Yankie, 108 W. Leyba & Ingalls Arts will feature "GLASSworks" by Adele Ryan and Dayna Griego, with an opening reception 4-7 p.m. on March 5.
Seedboat Gallery continues its show, "Three Interpretations of Printmaking," through April 3. A reception for the artists — Ka Fisher, Robert Medina Cook and Judith Hilmer Connelly — will be held March 5 from 4-7 p.m. 214 W. Yankie St., 534-1136.

The Mogollon Rim Fiber Guild will meet Saturday, March 20, at 9 a.m. at the WNMU Chino Building, with a program on art dolls and recycling.

Judy Bess and Lucia Wilcox are in the spotlight this month at Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery in Mesilla. After retiring from a career in business, Bess returned to acrylic painting, depicting the beauty of the southwest desert. The Downtown Ramble in Las Cruces, Friday, March 5, will include two new group exhibits opening at the Branigan Cultural Center, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The Southern Chapter of the New Mexico Watercolor Society juried spring membership show will be in the Shannon Gallery. Twenty-three local artists will display 34 paintings selected by jurors Michael and Victoria Copeland of Alamogordo. The Friday Painters group show, "The World Around Us," will be on display in the Richardson Gallery. Both exhibits will remain on display through Saturday, March 27. 501 N. Main St., 541-2154.
A juried exhibition of works by 38 artists from southern New Mexico and El Paso will also open March 5 at the Preston Contemporary Art Center, with a reception from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Artworks for the exhibition representing a variety of mediums were selected by Joshua Rose, NMSU art professor emeritus. The Preston will also host an Artists Dialogue presentation, where gallery visitors are invited to enjoy a conversation with artists Dan Davidson and Amy M. Lam Wai Man on Sunday afternoon, March 7, at 1 p.m. The two artists are part of the center's 2010 Winter Exhibition. Both exhibitions will run through March 28. 1755 Avenida de Mercado, 523-8713.
Author and artist James Warhola will present a reading and book signing, to be followed by a formal lecture, at the Rio Grande Theatre on Saturday, March 6, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Warhola is the nephew of artist Andy Warhol and the author and illustrator of several children's books. The Warhol film Eat will be screened from 12-12:30 p.m. At 12:30 p.m., Warhola will present his lecture, recounting memories of his uncle and life in the Warhola family, entitled "Warhola to Warhol." 211 N. The exhibition "Warhol & Pop Art," featuring more than 20 works by Andy Warhol, as well as artwork by his fellow pop artists, and a series of photographs by Billy Name, continues at the Museum of Art, 491 N. Main St. 541-2137.
The NMSU Art Gallery will host the 2010 Juried Student Art Show with an opening reception at 5 p.m. and awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, March 12. Professor Ray Parish, of University of Texas at El Paso and founder of the Border Art Residency Program in La Union, will be the juror and assign more than 20 cash awards. D.W. Williams Hall, 1390 E. The New Mexico Watercolor Society, Southern Chapter, will meet on Sunday, March 14, at 2 p.m., at Good Sam's, 3011 Buena Vida Circle. After a brief business meeting, member Penny Simpson (this month's Desert Exposure cover artist) will talk about and demonstrate her watercolor technique that produces her trademark black background and luminescent subjects.
