'Tis the Season!
Le nouveau est arrive! Shevek and Co. invites the public to celebrate the 2009 French harvest of Nouveau Beaujolais — a tradition much looked forward to by oenophiles this time of year — with its annual Nouveau Beaujolais party, slated for Nov. 20-21, 5-9 p.m. The classically trained former New York chef Shevek Barnhart is the only Silver City restaurateur this reporter can name who honors the yearly arrival of the noble rot that must be drunk young. Reservations recommended!
And, honoring another tradition, Shevek and Co. is taking reservations for its family-style Thanksgiving dinner, on Turkey Day, Nov. 26, serving 12-7 p.m. Reservations required for the annual feast, traditionally a sell-out. 602 N. Bullard St., at 6th, 534-9168, silver-eats.com
It’s anniversary season at Silver City’s Curious Kumquat. As promised here last month, the international grocery and café will hold a fifth birthday celebration Nov. 14, 5-9 p.m. 534-0337.
New Eats!
Japanese Kitchen has opened at 141 Roadrunner Parkway, in the Bank of the West plaza in Las Cruces. The restaurant — which dishes up steak, chicken, shrimp, sushi and other items — also has a location in El Paso. Open for lunch 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and dinner 5-9:30 p.m. 521-3555.
Buns in the Oven
A sign outside the block of empty shops at Espina and University Avenues gives hope that new life is coming in the form of another Zeffiro's Pizzeria. The company opened an outlet in downtown Las Cruces earlier this year.
Looking to expand and further serve its established customer base, Mountain View Market will soon be opening a vegetarian deli. 1300 El Paseo, 523-0436.
Pizza, pizza! A second Little Caesars pizza location should open in Las Cruces before the year is out. That's the word from El Paso businessman Ernest Koury, who owns the current Little Caesars restaurant at 2499 N. Main St., as well as locations in El Paso and Alamogordo. The new location will be located at 1609 El Paseo Road, site of the former Tommy's Cake Shop & Caf, and will feature a drive-thru lane with pick-up window. The restaurant will employ 20 to 25 people, and Koury says he's looking for a spot in which to open a third Little Caesars. www.littlecaesars.com
The in-progress De La Vega’s Pecan Grill and Brewery, in the site of the former Las Cruces Garduño’s at 500 S. Telshor Blvd., is aiming for a mid-December opening.
The Changing Scenery
Going to the dogs, as they say Andrea Schneider moved her Andele Restaurante earlier this year from 2184 Avenida de Mesilla to 1950 Calle del Norte. Now the original storefront has re-opened as Andele's Dog House, with a menu featuring a Mexican hot dog as its main item. Served up on specialty buns baked locally, the tube steaks can be ordered up with pinto beans, bacon, jalapeo mayo and a plethora of other custom items. Don't do dogs? The menu also includes hamburgers, quesadillas and paletas. 526-9632.
A sign reports that Las Cruces' Gasoline Alley is moving, but who knows where?
After much change — moving due to a fire, re-opening, etc. — Dick's Cafe in Mesilla is gone.
