The bulk of the film concerns his first case, very roughly based on fact, defending a couple of farmers accused of manslaughter. Lincoln is a mediator who knows how to treat those less fortunate and less educated, as well as those who occupy positions of power. He's just as at home spending time with the gentle, loving family of the accused as he is in the raucous courtroom (where people show up drunk, take naps and generally wait for the lynching to begin). In essence, this Lincoln helped bring humanity to a wild, unruly nation, and director John Ford has done him justice in this film. CineMatinee. Wilhelm Uhde, a German art critic and collector, discovers her paintings while she is working for him as a maid in the beautiful countryside of Senlis near Paris in the early part of the 20th century. A moving and unexpected relationship develops between the avant-garde art dealer and the visionary cleaning lady. Tiber, working at his parents' rundown El Monaco motel in the Catskills, almost accidentally launches the rock concert concept by sputtering words about freedom of expression to local journalists. The interview hits the newspapers, and Manhattan promoters are soon on their way with bags of money to support Tiber's venture. Pieces of April — $4, $1 for Mesilla Valley Film Society members. 1:30 p.m. A young woman who has never quite fit in with her family — she's the April of the title, played by Katie Holmes — coaxes them out of their comfy suburban environs to have Thanksgiving dinner at her small, cheerful dump of a flat in Manhattan. April's relationship has always been particularly prickly with her mother, Joy. Certain that they won't be able to stomach April's cooking, the family loads up on doughnuts for their drive down to the city, and Joy remarks that she doesn't have a single pleasant memory of April's childhood or adolescence. Joy is also dying of cancer, which is part of the reason April is making this heroic cooking effort in the first place. But the film isn't one of those dreaded "cancer mom" movies, but a movie about community as family — about the makeshift families that we come up with out of necessity when the ones we were born into don't quite fit the bill. Coco Before Chanel — Through Dec. 3. $7 regular, $6 matinee, $5 Wednesdays, seniors, students with ID and Mesilla Valley Film Society Members. 7:30 p.m. nightly, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. ''In order to be irreplaceable,'' said the legendary French couturier Gabrielle ''Coco'' Chanel, ''one must always be different.'' The very feminine, very inward-looking French biopic examines the influences that made Chanel so different — and so irreplaceable. The woman who became Chanel grew up a poor, skinny orphan in a convent school, where she learned sewing as a trade. She idled in her early years as a cabaret singer, lived with one protective rich man while falling in love with another, and hewed to a life of unmarried independence that hid a tough, sad heart. The impoverished kids in Abu Raed's neighborhood assume he's actually a pilot and treat him with such exaggerated respect that he decides to play along, Arabian Nights-style, with tales of his imagined travels. But one boy, Murad, resists the storyteller's charms and grows hell-bent on exposing Captain Abu Raed as a fraud. Raed is sympathetic to his young detractor.
