After the ceremony, his brother engineers persuade him to take in a party. Horten's decision to attend leads to an escalating series of disruptions that get wonderfully strange. Sin Nombre — Through Sept. 24. $7 regular, $6 matinee, $5 Wednesdays, seniors, students with ID and Mesilla Valley Film Society Members. 7:30 p.m. nightly, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. This film by director Cary Joji Fukunaga is an elegant, heartbreaking fable, equal parts Shakespearean tragedy, neo-Western and mob movie. It deftly weaves two stories of desperation. The first centers on Willy, an introspective Mexican teenager beginning to chafe against the murderous strictures of his gang. The second follows Sayra, a Honduran girl stowing away on a train through Mexico in the hopes of sneaking across the Texas border. As their fates collide and diverge, the film tenderly considers the rubs of a life lived on the verge of something — on the verge of death, of hope, of honor and dishonor, damnation and redemption. Becoming Eduardo follows Eddie Corazon, a 16-year-old juvenile delinquent and secret reader, who attends an alternative high school in rural New Mexico. Easy Virtue — 4 p.m. To his ancestral seat, a fresh young man named John brings his great love Larita to meet his hostile mother, his shambling father and his unfortunate sisters Marion and Hilda, one snobbish, the other fawning. Perhaps the innocent John never realized how toxic his mother and elder sister were until Larita arrived to attract their poison. Larita is an auto racer, the recent winner of the Monaco Grand Prix. It's worth remembering that in the 1920s, racing drivers and pilots were admired almost like astronauts are today, and females were goddesses. Yet Larita, an American unschooled in the labyrinth of the British upper crust, earnestly hopes to make her alliance with John a success. She does everything that an American girl is taught to do, even supervising the preparation of what may be the first edible meal ever served in the stately home (recall that all-purpose 1920s Brit recipe: "Cook until dead"). This Woody Allen film's title refers to tangled farcical trysts that develop among its characters — primarily Boris Yelnitkov (Larry David), a genius physicist with a mean mouth and a suicidal streak, and a young Mississippi belle (Evan Rachel Wood) with more spunk than intellect. He fills up her bubble brain with string theory and pessimism. She cooks, cleans and exudes sunshine. He lets her in on the secrets of the universe. She gives him a reason to enjoy life. Soon their world extends to her repressed mother, a hunky Australian actor and a few other random figures. Fountain Theatre, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe, 524-8287, www.fountaintheatre.org.

Charles Gatewood, who respects the great Geronimo and brokers a treaty with the Chiricahua, only to see it collapse when the army kills the tribal medicine man. New Mexico resident Gene Hackman plays Gen. George Crook, the proud but sympathetic officer charged with bringing in the renegades who take to hills after the killing.
