Table Talk

vickies

Greg Bonds checked in to say that he and his wife/partner MaryAnn Marlar are moving their Silver City restaurant, Vicki's Eatery, over to the former Elk's Lodge at Texas and Market, on (underground) Yankie Creek. Lord willing and the, pardon me, creek don't rise, Bonds expects to be closed to complete the move-in process August 18-19, reopening in the new space on August 20. Same name, same great breakfast and lunch menu — more tables and that historical cachet of the greatly refurbished grand old Elks Lodge.

Yankie Creek Coffee, also owned by the Bonds/Marlar team, will stay put at the corner of Texas and Yankie Streets. 388-5430.

1zero6, Jake Politte's international fusion cafe in Silver City, just received a 2009 Fodor's Choice Award. Though the tattooed chef seems to eschew most things conventional, he's delighted with this heavy-hitting endorsement from the restaurant gods — sorta like the Golden Globes of the restaurant biz. "I sure am proud!" Politte enthused after hearing the news. "Proudly displayed on the front window, it is!" he says of the award now hanging at the cafe.Hot out of the oven!

Ruth Olsson and Jeff Schadel, owners of The Marketplace and operators of Fun Resale & Rental in The Hub at 601 Bullard St., are buying "Bad Ass Barb" Fila's business, Bad Ass Bakery, at 308 S. Bullard. This means Silver City's storied Schadel's Bakery will live again in the town that made it an institution, as Jeff Schadel is descended from that family of bakers. In fact, Olsson and Schadel's venture will be called Schadel's Bakery and there will be a Schadel in the kitchen, as Jeff Schadel will be tying one on — an apron, that is. "I've got 17 years of experience as a professional baker," he says. "We're bringing back some of the old favorite Schadel's Bakery products, adding bread to the mix, and we'll be trying our hand at making real bagels." Schadel says the plan is to be up and running by some time in September. 388-2897

.And speaking of bagels: Katie Hille and her mother Sue Hamilton may have found a buyer for their Las Cruces business, Durango Bagel, 1495 S. Solano Dr. After having the eatery up for sale since last year, Hille confirms that a deal is in the works and may close soon. Hille and Hamilton have owned the company since summer 2004 and moved it from 2460 Locust St. to its current location in 2007.

Six degrees of Tegmeyer's: El Tiburon, a Mexican seafood place, has opened at 504 E Amador, the location Tegmeyer's alumna and repackager Miss Eddie's occupied oh-so-briefly. 647-4233.And the Hot Rod Cafe has opened at 1300 El Paseo, where Tegmeyer's used to be, before Miss Eddie bought it out and moved. 525-1958.

Joy Luck runs out: Las Cruces recently lost two Chinese restaurants: China Super Buffet, 850 N. Telshor Blvd., and Joy Luck Chinese, 3530 Foothills Road.
