Everlasting Moments — Through June 4. $7 regular, $6 matinee, $5 Wednesdays, seniors, students with ID and Mesilla Valley Film Society Members. 7:30 p.m. nightly, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. In Sweden in 1911, Maria Larsson lives with her husband, Sigrid, a loving and jovial man when sober, but violent when he is drunk. Once, when newly married, Maria won a camera in a lottery. Now she finds it and takes it to a photo shop to pawn it and buy food. There she meets Sebastian Pedersen, who develops a forgotten plate still in the camera, then says he will buy the camera, but Maria must continue to take pictures. Maria is not sophisticated but an instinctively gifted photographer. The film is not about how she leaves her drunken husband and becomes a famous photographer; it is about how her inner life is transformed by discovering that she has an artistic talent. She continues to be committed to Sigrid by a bond deeper than marriage or obligation. But she tentatively takes steps toward personal independence that were rare in that time. Is there anyone better than John Malkovich at barely containing his temper? He gravitates toward characters who do not suffer fools lightly, and that would include the Great Buck Howard, who once was Johnny Carson's favorite guest. Buck was dropped from Johnny's guest list and now takes his magic act from small stages to smaller ones, but he still has his dignity. The film is funny and perceptive in the way it shows the humiliations for a man with Buck's tender vanity — being bumped off the news by Jerry Springer, being bumped off Jay Leno for Tom Arnold. Hunger — Through July 2. $7 regular, $6 matinee, $5 Wednesdays, seniors, students with ID and Mesilla Valley Film Society Members. 7:30 p.m. nightly, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. A film that asks the viewer to enter Northern Ireland's Maze prison, 1981, and watch IRA prisoner Bobby Sands lead a hunger strike that will leave him dead at the age of 27. Sands' intent is to have IRA inmates recognized as political prisoners entitled to rights under the rules of war. The movie begins with a prison guard leaving home after washing his bruised, bleeding knuckles. The guard heads off to the H blocks, where he'll pick up more scars during the strip-searches and beatings. We see prisoners naked or in blankets, refusing to wear uniforms. They use their own excrement to smear walls, letting urine flow under the doors of cells. The movie is a sensory wallop, director Steve McQueen's way of showing the body itself as an arsenal, arguably the last weapon any of us have to fight back. THEM! — $4, $1 for Mesilla Valley Film Society members. 1:30 p.m. Join special guest host, Jay Duncan, one of the region's premiere experts on science fiction films of the 1950s, for a special 65th anniversary screening of this exciting and fun film.\ about a nest of giant radioactive ants (the result of an atomic test in the New Mexico desert). It retains a good part of its power today. All the prime ingredients of the total mobilization movie are here: Massed darkened troops move through the eerie storm drains of Los Angeles; biblical prophecy is intermixed with gloomy speculation about the effect of radioactivity. Almost semi-documentary in approach, the formula is handled with more subtlety than usual, and the special effects are frequently superb. CineMatinee.
