No sooner do the girls spot Juan Antonio, a bedroom-eyed painter, than he's hitting on both of them. What sparks the movie is Penelope Cruz as Maria Elena, the painter's ex-wife, a fireball given to strong emotions. The two trading one-liners in Spanish is so ferociously funny you won't even need the subtitles. But watching Cruz, switching between Spanish and English, untamed passion and chilly despair, is a lesson in the art of acting. Sunday. A gambler determined to do whatever she must for her family, Ray's odyssey is anything but depressing. She lives near a Mohawk Indian Nation, where a laconic young Mohawk smuggler, Lila Littlewolf, becomes her tutor, and her partner in crime. Nothing fits neatly in the lives of these characters. Victor and Thomas have been raised on Idaho's poverty-stricken Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation. One is a taciturn athlete while the other is a socially awkward nerd. The two are drawn together when Thomas gives Victor the money he needs to travel to Phoenix, where his estranged and alcoholic father has died. On the road they reminisce about the past and clash with strangers, and Victor learns more about his dad. The film pokes fun at the interface between life on "the rez" and the dominant white culture, also revealing how ritual, humor, and friendship can be healing medicine for anyone caught up in grief. Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson — $5. 11 a.m. Thompson made a name for himself by riding with, writing about, and eventually angering the Hells Angels. Through studious drug use, a finely honed sense of black comedy, and highly subjective and frequently fantasy-prone reporting, he created a journalistic subgenre called "gonzo" that sought a deeper truth than could be achieved by traditional means. Readings and re-creations of Thompson's work by Johnny Depp. Beloved or hated, the outrageous, gun-toting, drug-crazed character who happened to write carved out a piece of America all his own, and stayed there until he didn't want to stick around anymore. Up the Yangtze — Through Nov. 20. $7 regular, $6 matinee, $5 Wednesdays, seniors, students with ID and Mesilla Valley Film Society Members. 7:30 p.m. nightly, 2:30 p.m. Documentary. China's Three Gorges Dam is considered by many experts to be a full-steam-ahead eco-disaster, but director Yung Chang's gorgeous meditation is more concerned with the project's human collateral damage: old farmers evicted; young people in servitude to Western tourists, all brought about by an endeavor whose collective weight may ultimately tilt the Earth's axis. But the film embraces irony rather than righteous indignation. The qualities of the production, like the Three Gorges itself, are oceanic in scope, giving a human dimension to the wrenching changes facing not only an increasingly globalized China, but the world at large. Fountain Theatre, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe, 524-8287, www.fountaintheatre.org

But the film embraces irony rather than righteous indignation. The qualities of the production, like the Three Gorges itself, are oceanic in scope, giving a human dimension to the wrenching changes facing not only an increasingly globalized China, but the world at large.
