Page: 2There is simply no valid excuse for stray dogs. I spent $200 for 250 feet of fencing and posts to keep my dogs in the yard and stray dogs out! If I can come up with the money to fence, then most others can, too, especially if the area to be fenced is less than mine. It's especially important when we hear that rabies is in our area.
By the way, with rabies about, Gigi says that it is imperative that all pets are up to date with shots. With free or discounted clinics available at the shelter, there is simply no excuse for people not to do so.
The folks at the shelter take excellent care of the animals and facilities. I've bought purebred dogs on three different occasions from private breeders, and in every instance, the dogs were less clean and well-cared-for than at the Humane Society's facility.
So now, you want to adopt a dog, what do you do? The shelter is open Tuesday through Saturday each week. Go in and see the desk staff and tell them your expectations; then ask that one of the three caretakers go with you to check out the dogs. When you find animals you like, ask the staff all about them. (Buddy says that most folks don't ask a thing but just point at a dog and say they'll take it, without ever petting the dog or taking it for a walk!)
Then take your choices out one at a time and interact with each and take the dog for a walk. See if it knows any obedience commands! Decide if you are able to train it first. If you have other dogs, bring them along to check out the potential newcomer.
Once you pick your pooch, go to the front desk and fill out the paperwork and pay the fees. If the dog is already "fixed" it won't cost you as much and you can take the dog with you that day.
You have 14 days to see if this is indeed the right dog for you. If not, you can bring it back and get a partial refund (minus a $20 return fee).
Our new dog Misty, though, is definitely a keeper.
