The Branigan Cultural Center will host three separate exhibits with opening receptions on each of the first three Fridays of the month. The Annual Las Cruces Arts Association Membership Show will exhibit works in a variety of styles and mediums in the Shannon Room, opening May 2, 5-7 p.m., as part of the Downtown Ramble. NMSU seniors from the Department of Art present their graduation show, May 9-17, with works on display at both the Museum of Art and the center, with a reception May 9, 5-7 p.m. "Nosotras: Portraits of Latinas," opening May 16, features 50 photographs from eight emerging photographers documenting the lives and culture of Latinas. The New Mexico Watercolor Society, Southern Chapter, will present board and standing committee chairs for membership voting and approval at its meeting at the Cultural Center, May 11, 2 p.m. Following the general business meeting, printmaker Lois Smith will demonstrate a gelatin plate monotype technique. $5 non-members, $3 members. Laughing at the Sun gallery will exhibit representational paintings, collages, and monotypes by Las Cruces artist Rochelle Barda and bowls, platters and art pieces by glass artist Greta Burger in May. 1910 Calle De Parian, Mesilla. 523-1890.

Stephen Hansen's 11th show as a featured artist at Glenn Cutter Jewelers and Gallery continues through May 23. The show includes many whimsical sculptures in papier mache, some of them "indirectly political." 2640 El Paseo Rd., 524-4300.



Artists in the News

 

Two area photographers have been awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships: Silver City resident Michael P. Berman and David Taylor of Las Cruces, an NMSU art professor. Berman's award will support his ongoing photographic work in the Chihuahuan desert grasslands. Berman's work is shown locally at Blue Dome Gallery in Silver City.

Red Rock artist JaNeil Anderson, the June 2007 Desert Exposure cover artist, has been selected as part of the El Paso Saddleblanket Company's Artists and Writers Showcase, May 10, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 6926 Gateway East, I-10, exit 25.
