The cheerful 1950s TV sitcom "Pleasantville" is revived in the 1990s for a loyal cable audience. One devoted fan is shy suburban teen David Wagner, who has an almost obsessive interest in the series. Living with his divorced mother, David sometimes has disputes with his ultra-hip twin sister Jennifer. She wants to watch MTV just when a "Pleasantville" marathon is about to begin. They struggle over the remote control, and it breaks. A strange TV repairman supplies their new remote, a potent high-tech device that zaps David and Jennifer inside Pleasantville. As "Bud" and "Mary Sue," the teens take up residence in a black-and-white suburbia where sex does not exist and the temperature is always 72 degrees. But repressed desires surface, cracks appear in the 1950s lifestyles, and the Pleasantville populace finds their lives changing in strange, wonderful ways. Nominated for three Academy Awards. Two-Lane Blacktop — $4, free for Mesilla Valley Film Society members. 1:30 p.m. Decidedly not for all tastes, this is a sometimes puzzling film that may not reveal all its intricacies on first viewing, but Warren Oates' superb performance provides the incentive (and all the reward) you'll need to stick it out to the end. James Taylor is The Driver, a car-obsessed racer with stringy hair and a concentration that precludes conversation. He travels the back roads of rural America with his buddy, The Mechanic (Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys), an equally obsessed lost soul at home only in the car or under the hood. They have no names, only designations, and no life outside of their gypsy existence, riding the unending highway in their souped-up 1955 Chevy from race to race. After picking up a hitchhiking Girl (Laurie Bird), whose presence breaks the tunnel-vision focus of the two men, they challenge a middle-aged hotshot, the garrulous "GTO" (Oates) to a cross-country race. Rated R, partially shot in New Mexico. CineMatinee. Fountain Theatre, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe, 524-8287/522-0286.
