Glenwood's Golden Girls Café‚ serves up a hearty, down-home breakfast with a helping of local flavor.
Welcome! Grab a table. Nothin' fancy here.
If you have the good fortune to be passing through or waking up in sleepy little Glenwood, make sure you fuel up with a hearty breakfast at the Golden Girls Caf‚ on Hwy. 180, just up the street from the turnoff for the Catwalk recreation area. It's breakfast only here, so don't sleep in too late or you'll miss it.
Yeah, you'll be pegged as non-local as soon as you walk in the door. But mind your manners, don't act too "Big City," and dig into an honest taste of the local scene and a down-home breakfast you'll surely wish your mama had made.
The specials listed up on the whiteboard all come with biscuits and gravy, and the ample menu has all the usual suspects — omelets, pancakes, French toast and, of course, breakfast burritos — clueing you into the rib-sticking satisfaction ahead.
Coffee, a given for us, came to the table pronto, full-bodied and steaming hot. Creamers are shared amongst customers, and a friendly lady at the next table passed hers automatically when our coffee came.
The Poorman's Special ($4.75) was impressive — almost intimidating, in fact. A generous amount of perfectly scrambled eggs with onions (can omit), smothered in sausage gravy, came with sides of home-fried potatoes and sausage or ham. The omnipresent grilled biscuit was the best we'd ever tasted. The eggs in our Full Breakfast ($4.75) were done perfectly over-easy, and came with potatoes and biscuit, of course. The ham we'd picked for our meat option was a juicy thick slab.
Looking to go light? There's a simple breakfast sandwich on an English muffin for just $2.
And if you're heading out for a day on the Catwalk and think you might work up an appetite, Golden Girls will send you off right with a Backpacker's Special ($5) — a PB&J, ham or bologna and cheese sandwich, cookie, fruit cup and all the accessories in a brown sack to go.
