Kick Up Your Heels at the Millie & Billy Ball,
June 10
Get out your Wild West duds and your, er, outfits of ill repute—it's time for the third annual Millie & Billy Ball. The fundraiser for the Mimbres Region Arts Council (MRAC) will be held on Saturday, June 10, from 7 p.m. to midnight, at the Flame Convention Center. The festivities once again celebrate, with tongue firmly in check, Silver City's famous citizens, Madame Millie and Billy the Kid. Attendees are invited to come dressed in period costumes, from Billy's 1870s and 1880s or the 1920s on up to the 1970s in honor of Millie. A costume contest will reward the best-dressed ball-goers.
South by Southwest, a country swing band from Taos, will return to provide live music. A BBQ dinner catered by Brewer Hill Baptist Church is included in the cost of admission and a full cash bar will also be available.
Dinner and dance tickets will cost $25 per person and must be purchased in advance. Also available are $100 tickets, which include dinner-dance admission for two and a chance to win a $10,000 raffle. "Reward" winners need not be present to win, but must be at least 18 years old. Admission to the ball is restricted to those age 21 and older, and ID is required. Tickets are available at the MRAC office in the Wells Fargo Bank in Silver City. A limited number of tickets are available. Last year's $10,000 winner, Carla Buckner, will portray Madame Millie at the event this year.
According to Millie & Billy Ball committee co-chairs Sue Sherman and Francisca Vega, the first two years were highly successful and they are expecting even bigger things this year. "People got into the spirit of things, the costumes were really creative, the music was great and people enjoyed the chance to 'dress up' and have some fun," Sherman says. Vega adds, "The generous dance floor at the Flame gives dancers plenty of room to swing to the great music provided by South by Southwest. It's one of the few opportunities we have locally to really kick up our heels!"
The 2006 Millie & Billy Ball is sponsored by Manzanita Ridge and Prudential Silver City Properties. For more information, call 538-2505 or see www.mimbresarts.org.
