The signing of the Gadsden Purchase in 1854 brought dignitaries from Washington and Mexico City to La Mesilla, at that time the largest town in Northern Mexico. Among them were elderly Señor Pedro Chavez and General Pepperday, suitors for the hands of Teresa Valdez and Sara Conrad. Why We Fight—Through June 8. Eugene Jarecki's documentary about the corporatization of war opens with a potent touch of irony: footage of President Dwight Eisenhower, in his 1961 farewell address, warning the nation against the encroaching military-industrial complex. The film is a somber polemic that presents a convincing case against using war as an economic booster. The Wild Rovers—William Holden and Ryan O'Neal play a couple of shiftless ranch hands who impulsively decide to rob a bank. Wild Weather Exhibit—Through June 30. This interactive exhibition, based on the physics and mathematics of wind, air, heat, light and sound, is a hands-on approach to understanding the science behind everyday weather. Using devices such as a working weather station, a simulated tornado and Doppler radar, visitors explore science concepts that are the foundation of meteorology, such as the water cycle, wind, lightning and heat.
