September 2010

What's New in Desert Exposure

As has become an annual tradition at Desert Exposure, this issue presents the winners of our writing contest. Once again, readers will enjoy a collection of remarkable authorship, ranging from sharply evocative poetry to laugh-out-loud hijinks, all of which share a uniquely Southwestern sensibility. While we love seeing submissions from past favorites, four of this year's five honorees are first-time winners, including grand-prize winner Bill Voyce. Among the other finalists, only Phillip Parotti—whose name will automatically bring a smile to readers who've enjoyed his past work in our pages—has previously placed in our contest. The other newcomers to our writing winners circle are Patricia Conway, Phyllis Reiche and Noreen Lehmann.

We know you'll enjoy reading this year's winning words about llamas, "Bronco Bill," a '37 Chevy, an out-of-place gator and a premature coffin. And thanks to the magic of the Internet, if you missed last year's winning entries, you can still catch up on them here.

That's not all in this new issue, of course. Jay W. Sharp goes hawk watching and brings back a profile of the fleet and deadly Red-Tailed Hawk. (Read Jay's previous stories about the wildlife of the Southwest in our online collection.) Southwest Storylines columnist Richard Mahler catches up with the Silver City Newcomers Club—which turns out to be not just for newbies. Restaurant writer Peggy Platonos visits Palma's Italian Grill in Deming. Plus we've got the scoop on roller derby coming to Las Cruces and the, er, inside story on that colonoscopy you've been dreading. All prepped? Start reading!

(Another way to make this a September to remember is to give a listen at the free Picknicamania festival in Silver City's Gough Park on Saturday, Sept. 11—NOT Sept. 17 or 18 as we erroneously listed in our print edition. Read more about it in last month's Bayou Seco Rolling Postcard—where, yes, we got the date right!)
