July 2009

What's New in Desert Exposure

What better time than the middle of summer to think about beer? Our July issue will quench your thirst for knowledge with features on two local brewpubs: Reformed pilsner drinker Donna Clayton gets a lesson in hops from Bob Gosselin of High Desert Brewing in Las Cruces. Plus we check in with the Silver City Brewing Company as it ramps up its own beer-making efforts.

How about some pecans to go with that beer? You'll have to wait a few years for writer Susan Baker's grove to start producing, but in the meantime you can enjoy her delightful tale of the adventure of planting her own pecan trees.

This issue also brings a look at efforts to help residents of New Mexico's colonias help themselves, a tour of Silver City and its transplanted Santa Rita houses with 90-year-old Melvin Huff, and a guide to spotting some unlikely desert-dwelling birds. (Just follow the water and you can see species ranging from mallards to Canada geese, according to author and photographer Jay W. Sharp.)

Plus we sample the eye-popping work of Las Cruces photographer Robert Yee, explore the world of a modern-day medicine woman and enjoy our annual "Rolling Postcard" from itinerant musicians Bayou Seco. That's just the beginning, of course, of this month's editorial fireworks.

And for a complete guide to July 4 pyrotechnics and what to do after the smoke clears, don't miss our exhaustive events guide.
